Carpet of Blue Death is the seventh & last Forensics level in Trauma Team, & the second & last in the Patient Zero Finale sequence.
Opening[]
The episode opens with Naomi Kimishima, Maria Torres and Agent Holden flying a helicopter towards Mexico in hopes of tracking down Rosalia Rossellini in the hopes of obtaining a sample of her blood in order to create an antiserum to cure the current outbreak of Rosalia Virus back in Portland. Holden then says how difficult it would be to find Rosalia without having a single clue of where she even is. Naomi suggest showing her picture to the locals, which Holden retorts that there are so many villages that they would not find her before the virus would kill every infected patient. The sun begins to rise over the Sierra Madres, illuminating the sky and the massive migration of Monarch Butterflies. Maria then recalls what CR-S01 mentioned earlier while they were in the orphanage: the photo of Rosalia they had found had monarch butterflies, implying that they were close to the area she was in. Maria then tells Holden to follow the swarm of butterflies in the opposite direction of their trajectory, which he says is worth a shot.
After some time they find the field of flowers that was in the photo of Rosalia. Once the chopper lands nearby, Naomi, Maria and Holden rush to the body of Rosalia, which is surrounded by blue flowers. Maria remarks at how big Rosalia had grown, while Holden realizes that Rosalia had become completely adipocere, making it impossible to obtain a blood sample from her now. Naomi then asks Maria and Holden to investigate the nearby laboratory while she performs an examination on Rosalia's corpse to determine how she died. Both Maria and Holden do as asked and walk off.
At this time, Naomi receives her trademark call, with only one word being in said message: "Beginning..."
Investigation[]
Examining Rosalia's corpse, we see a gunshot wound on her chest, piercing all the way through her back. Quiz: "An entrance GSW is usually smaller than the exit wound. That would make this..." Answers: "The entrance GSW" for the chest and "The exit GSW" for the back. Another gunshot wound presents in her right thigh, indicating that it passed from back to front. Quiz: "An exit GSW is usually larger than the entrance wound. That would make this..." Answers: "The exit GSW" for the front and "The entrance GSW" for the back. The bottoms of her feet have dirt on them, with a laceration on the left foot. Quiz: "Dirt was found around the bleeding cut on the sole of her foot. This shows that..." Answer: "She walked on the injured foot". Another gunshot wound is present on her hand, with black particles on the palm. Quiz: "From my understanding of the events that went on, the weapon that made the wound on the right palm was..." Answer: "A gun". Finally, we spot hypostasis (blood collecting) in the back.
Examining the effects will reveal bullet wounds and bloodstains in the places she was shot. We also notice patterns on the chest where blood was dripping. Quiz: "If the fine bloodstains on the chest area of her clothing were from the chest wound, it wouldn't make sense that..." Answer: "It's splattered around".
Now we can start lining up the evidence. Put the two chest wounds together. Quiz: "The entrance GSW is in the chest, and the exit GSW is in the back. In other words, the victim was..." Answer: "Shot from the front". Card obtained: "Gunshot Wound From Front". Compare the wounds on her thigh. Quiz: "The wound on the front of the thigh is the exit GSW, and the wound to the back side is the entrance GSW. This means the victim was..." Answer: "Shot from behind". Card obtained: "Gunshot Wound from Behind". Something is wrong: The bullet wound sizes don't match up. Analyze the wound on her hand to make sure. Quiz: "It seems that Rosalia raised her hand towards the gun's muzzle. She would have done this to..." Answer: "Try to protect herself". Card obtained: "Defensive Wound on Right Palm". We now know what caused the blood splatters on her clothing. Quiz: "There was a defensive wound on Rosalia's hand and a gunshot to her chest. The fine bloodstains on her clothing are likely from..." Answer: "Bleeding from right palm". Card obtained: "Bullet Trajectory". Check the hypostasis to determine what position the victim died in. Quiz: "The hypostasis on the corpse matches the position Rosalia's body was found in. This shows that..." Answer: "The corpse was not moved". This doesn't line up with our discovery of the body in the center of the blue flowers. Quiz 2: "If Rosalia didn't collapse in the middle of the blue flowers by coincidence, it's possible that..." Answer: "The killer moved her there". Card obtained: "Blue Deathbed". Analyze the black particles on her hand as well. It is revealed to be gunshot residue. Quiz: "The gunpowder that flies out of a gun when it is fired doesn't go very far. If powder is found on Rosalia's palm, it means..." Answer: "She was shot from close range". Card obtained: "Close-Range GSW". Try analyzing all the gunshot wounds again. First, the chest wound. Quiz: "The wound that directly caused Rosalia's death was..." Answer: "Gunshot to the chest". Quiz 2: "Rosalia died from the gunshot wound to the chest. Which direction was that shot fired from?" Answer: "Front". Quiz 3: "Rosalia was alive until right before being shot in the chest. The proof of this is..." Answer: "Defensive wound on palm". Quiz 4: "The other important clue left on Rosalia's right palm was..." Answer: "Gunshot residue". Quiz 5: "If gunshot residue is found on a target, then the gun was fired..." Answer: "At close range". All gunshot wound cards are replaced with the card "Murderous Intent". Next, the leg wound, although that won't get you anywhere at first.
Look for evidence in the nearby research lab. Although it's dark inside, poking around is worth a try. You find drops of blood leading across the floor. On the floor beside the desk is also a bullet case. The glass from the door has also been shattered, with another bullet case just inside the door. One piece will also have blood on it. We also pick up a broken tape recorder.
Go back and analyze the bullet cases. Both are casings for 9mm rounds, which doesn't tell us anything special. However, they do show the marks of being fired with a semi-automatic firearm. Quiz: "The gun used in this area ejected empty casings when it was fired. So, the locations where empty cases are found are where..." Answer: "A shot was fired". Both of these bullets were fired from the areas the casings were found. Next, ask Little Guy about the glass. Also analyze the blood found on the floor. Ask Little Guy about the broken glass. Try to see if the tape recorder can be repaired. While it can't, Little Guy will still be able to retrieve the data on it. Unfortunately, it has been corrupted, so reconstructing it will take some time.
One file can, however, be played right away. It doesn't say much, but it implies the isolation of the Rosalia Virus. After this, Little Guy will reveal that the blood on the floor belonged to Sartre. Card obtained: "Albert's Bloodstain".
Next, try looking in the flower field. You will find the final bullet casing here. When you get back, the analysis on the broken glass will be complete. It will report that the glass was broken from the inside. Card obtained: "Glass Shattered From Inside". Then, analyze the last bullet case. It's a 9mm fired from a semi-automatic, just like the last two. Card obtained: "Third Bullet Casing". From what we now know, the bullet fired near the desk broke the glass in the door. Quiz: "At this point in the investigation, the number of bullets fired from inside the lab has been determined to be..." Answer: 2. Quiz 2: "The only evidence that a bullet hit something in the lab was..." Answer: "Glass from the door". Quiz 3: "The bullet that went through the glass in the entry door was fired from..." Answer: "Near the desk". Card obtained: "Glass-Breaking Shot". Finally, pair up the casing found in the flowers with the shot that killed Rosalia. Quiz: "The empty casing found in the blue flowers tells us..." Answer: "A shot was fired here". Quiz 2: "The empty casing in the flower field and Rosalia's fatal wound indicate that..." Answer: "Rosalia was killed here". Solid Evidence obtained: "Gun Shot in Flower Field". After this, the analysis on the bloody glass shard will come back, indicating that the blood was Rosalia's. Card obtained: "Rosalia's Bloodstain". Now we think we know where the cut on her foot came from. Quiz: "Rosalia's blood on the broken glass and the cut on her foot prove that she..." Answer: "Stepped on broken glass". Card obtained: "Cut By Glass". We also know where it came from in the first place: the shot that broke the glass. Quiz: "When the shot from the desk hit the door, Rosalia was standing..." Answer: "Inside the lab". Quiz 2: "Even though Rosalia had a cut on the bottom of her foot, she went outside because..." Answer: "She was running away". Quiz 3: "When the shooter who was indoors fired the gun, he was aiming at..." Answer: "Rosalia". At this point, Little Guy will interrupt us and report that he has found the location of the lock matching the key found on Sartre. It unlocks a safety deposit box containing a semi-automatic pistol. The gun holds seven rounds, with an eighth chambered, but three are missing. Quiz: "It's possible to keep seven bullets in the magazine, and one round in the chamber. Five bullets were found with the gun. How many could be missing?" Answer: "3 rounds". Quiz 2: "The information that coincides with the number of bullets missing from Albert's gun is..." Answer: "Number of shots used here". Solid Evidence obtained: "Scenario at the Entrance". We now have to find the bullets used here. Card obtained: "Albert's Gun". After this, we get a report on the discrepancy between Rosalia's wounds. They were made by the same caliber of gun, but are different sizes because they were fired at different distances. Card obtained: "Gunshot From a Distance". It adds on that the shot to her thigh was fired from farther away. This may be the shot fired from the entrance. Quiz: "When Rosalia was shot through the leg, she was standing..." Answer: "In the field of flowers". Quiz 2: "When Rosalia was shot in the right leg as she was running, the shooter was standing..." Answer: "Near the lab's door". Solid Evidence obtained: "Leg Shot From Entrance". Our task now is to find the bullet that killed her. Quiz: "The number of bullets fired at this scene is..." Answer: "Total of 3 shots". Quiz 2: "Of the three bullets fired in this case, the last one was fired..." Answer: "In the blue flower field". Quiz 3: "From the information at hand, when Rosalia was shot in the chest, she was..." Answer: "Collapsed on the ground". As this is indeed the case, we find the fatal bullet in the ground beneath the blue flowers, exactly where Rosalia was killed. Card obtained: "Fatal Bullet".
Show the bullet to Little Guy. It'll be a perfect match with Sartre's handgun. Card obtained: "Matching Rifling". Compare it with the gun card. Quiz: "The bullet that killed Rosalia matches the rifling from Albert's gun. This proves that..." Answer: "Albert killed Rosalia". Solid Evidence obtained: "Albert's Killing of Rosalia".
Soon a reconstructed file from the tape recorder will come in. It depicts an insane Sartre ranting that it's over and "it" was out of control, and he must stop it. Right after that, Little Guy will finish analyzing Sartre's bloodstain. It contains traces of saliva, proving that it was vomited. Card obtained: "Albert's Vomited Blood". It puzzles us though, because Albert died two years ago, long before the outbreak. Another file will come in, revealing some of Sartre's work on the Rosalia Virus. Even though it outlines the danger it poses, it also adds that Rosalia's blood is the key to stopping it. Quiz: "Rosalia was able to coexist with the virus due to a 'key' in her blood. That key was..." Answer: "An antibody". Card obtained: "Girl With Miraculous Blood". Now we can analyze the flowers Rosalia died among. Quiz: "Of these reasons Rosalia was lying in the blue flowers, the one I ruled out is..." Answer: "The killer moved the corpse". Quiz 2: "The evidence proving that Rosalia's corpse wasn't moved after she was killed is..." Answer: "The bullet in the ground". Little Guy will interject, saying the scene in the flowers was staged. Quiz 3: "The proof that Rosalia was alive until the moment she was shot in the chest is..." Answer: "Defensive wound on her hand".
You can get answers by collecting a sample of the blue flowers. Little Guy will reveal that they are Asclepias, which doesn't naturally come in blue. This has to be artificially engineered. Card obtained: "Blue Asclepias". Merge the only two clues you have left. Quiz: "The reason why the flowers around Rosalia were blue was because..." Answer: "They became discolored". Quiz 2: "The reason the Asclepias flowers around Rosalia's corpse became discolored is due to..." Answer: "Rosalia's blood". Card obtained: "Discolored Flowers". We now realize that Rosalia's blood, lost from the wound to her heart, soaked into the ground and was absorbed by the flowers, causing the color change. Putting the flowers together with Rosalia's deathbed allows us to solve the case. Quiz: "What colored the Asclepias flowers blue was..." Answer: "Rosalia's blood". Solid Evidence obtained: "Blue Death Blossoms". We know now that the Rosalia Virus escaped its natural host and was able to continue thriving inside the flowers. One thing must have been able to transmit the virus all the way to Portland. Quiz 2: "The vector that carried the virus from the blue Asclepias to cities 3000 km away was..." Answer: "Monarch butterflies". Solid Evidence obtained: "Death On Golden Wings".
The mysteries surrounding the deadly virus have been solved. Before we can unravel the truth once and for all, Little Guy sends us a deleted file from the recorder. This one was made by Rosalia, talking about her father's research on the virus. Naomi then has a vision of Rosalia where she pieces together the details of her death: Rosalia was killed by Sartre, who knew about the deadly virus living within her. His insanity from being infected with it prompted him to try and kill her in order to stop it. He first fired at her when they were both inside. The bullet missed and broke the glass in the door. Rosalia attempted to run away, stepping on a shard of glass in the process, but Sartre shot her in the leg before she'd gone far, causing her to collapse. Sartre caught up and fired the fatal bullet straight through her chest. Ironically, this did not stop the virus as he thought, but accidentally released it into a new host: the Asclepias flowers. The monarch butterflies that consumed parts of these flowers carried the virus themselves along their migration pattern. Anyone who came in contact with their shed scales became infected, causing the pandemic in the first place.
Ending[]
Back in the real world, Naomi becomes weak and coughs blood, and is assisted by Maria. Knowing what they must do, Naomi, Maria, and Holden collect the blue flowers to create the antiserum.
