Story[]
The NIH has received a request for help from a hospital - it's a new Stigma case. The Stigma's mobility is unprecedented, and attempts to analyze it have not been fruitful. The staff review the patient's notes, and the only notable element in their history is her reception of artificial blood in a past accident.
When reviewing the Stigma treatment process, Markus points out that dealing with a core will be key to defeating it, though he dismisses this observation as "a hunch". Still, the fact that he keeps getting tangled with Stigma makes him feel that he's being haunted by his past. Irene congratulates the team on a job well-done, but also informs them that the operation will be discussed at an upcoming conference. She also praises Markus for being able to adapt to the situation so quickly, which he brushes off as "being lucky".

Operation[]
This Stigma operation introduces you to the second strain, Soma. It's much less difficult than Cheir due to the infrequency of its attacks.
Begin by draining away from Soma. If it plants a red tumor, quickly switch away to burn it off with the laser. If unattended for too long, the tumor will harden, causing large vital damage. Hardened tumors must be removed like any normal tumors. Fortunately, there can only be one such tumor on the operating field at a time.
When you've drained Soma enough, its core is exposed. You have a short time to burn away the core with the laser before it vanishes to reform its fluid coating. From the second time you've exposed the core, Soma will split into three globules of fluid surrounding its core. If not drained quickly, these globules will harden like the tumors, and will need to be burned with the laser before you can excise them.
After you've burned down the core three times, Soma will manifest in two separate bodies - one contains the core (which flashes for a brief moment), while the fake will split into four globules if left unattended for long enough. The fake Soma will also never deposit red tumors. Still, identify and drain away the fake Soma quickly so that you have less to manage when dealing with the real one.

Operation Rank[]
Rank | Easy | Normal | Hard |
---|---|---|---|
C | <2000 | <3600 | <4800 |
B | 2000~2299 | 3600~3999 | 4800~5199 |
A | 2300~2599 | 4000~4199 | 5200~5599 |
S | ≥2600 | ≥4200 | 5600~5749 |
XS | - | - | ≥5750 |
Getting XS[]
It's possible to lose the core before you can burn it enough to register the "Ok", but the game will remember how much laser exposure the core had when regenerating Soma's fluid. If you're confident with your speed, you can focus on burning the core before draining away the Soma fluid globules, albeit at the risk of having some of them harden. You get less score by waiting for the fake Soma to split as opposed to taking the time to drain it.
