Samuel Trumbull is a supporting character and the patient in the diagnostics episode "Proud One". He is an USAMRIID Researcher infected with the Rosalia Virus.
Biography[]
Not much is known about Trumbull, apart from him joining the US Army at some point in his life, eventually becoming a researcher at the USAMRIID. At the time of "Proud One" episode, he is married and has a daughter "which will be turning 3 this summer".
Infection[]
Although it wasn't mentioned who discovered Albert Sartre's (who died after losing a lethal amount of blood through vomiting blood in a final attack of the Rosalia Virus infection) remains in Backcove, Portland, his remains and personal effects were brought back to the USAMRIID to be studied and analyzed. Unbeknownst to anyone, the remains were still highly infectious; when Trumbull used a router to shave off a portion of Sartre's bone, he accidentally inhaled pulverized particles of the bone, inadvertently infecting himself with the Rosalia Virus in the process.
The symptoms of the infection didn't go unnoticed by the Army's leaders, who then called Gabriel Cunningham (with the help of Assistant Secretary Tillman) to diagnose his condition.
Proud One[]
As the virus begins to spread and create colonies inside of Trumbull's body, tumors starts to grow in various parts of his body due to the virus' effect of suppressing the tumor suppressor gene: firstly, a Pancoast tumor in the lung that causes the constellation of symptoms first encountered in the chapter - blepharoptosis, chest pain, bloody sputum, numbness and swelling of the left arm, and swollen fingertips. While Gabe initially thought Trumbull was a "simple case" and that he will have time "to return for dinner", a chest X-ray performed after Trumbull experienced rapidly increasing chest pains revealed the bruise in his lung brought on by Rosalia Virus infection similar to the patient with rapidly advancing Kaposi's sarcoma, spurring Gabe to continue his investigation.
As the infection continues to ravage through Trumbull's body, a malignant liver tumor led to his second collection of symptoms: stomach pains and jaundice. A CT scan revealed the presence of a liver tumor, while scintigraphy led to the discovery of bruising similar in shape to the one found in his lungs. In the final phase of the infection, the symptoms of a full-blown Rosalia Virus infection then appears: fever, headache, muscle pains, bloodshot eyes and pigment spots on the skin. Hematemesis, hypotension and bleeding diatheses follows soon after, along with hematologic abnormalities and a positive virus antibody reaction test, which led Gabe to diagnose Trumbull with viral hemorrhagic fever.
Aftermath[]
In his fading consciousness, Trumbull begged Gabe to tell tell his wife and daughter that "he loves them with all of his heart", knowing well that he likely won't leave USAMRIID alive and thanks Gabe for "being able to be useful to a wonderful doctor like him" and that he hopes "he won't die in vain". His fate is then left unknown, but while examining Sartre's remains, Kimishima remarks that Sartre died "just like the man Gabe diagnosed", making it likely that Trumbull eventually succumbed to the infection.
